Income Tax Volunteer


Position Overview

The Income Tax volunteer assists lower income individuals by completing their annual personal income tax returns. As a volunteer of Links2Care, the volunteer will actively demonstrate Links2Care values and will promote and support the mission and vision of the agency.

Time Commitment

Individual appointments are made for those who qualify, mostly during the months of March and April, although some assistance may be required occasionally during other months of the year. Drop off returns are also done by volunteers who opt to do them off site. Time involvement will also depend on how much time each volunteer has available.

Duties/Activities/Responsibilities

  • Interacts professionally in accordance with Links2Care Code of Conduct and Human Rights Act.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality of all client records and information in accordance with Links2Care confidentiality/privacy policy.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Assist individuals or couples with completion of personal income tax forms.
  • Will either meet with client(s) according to a previously arranged appointment time, or will complete information on a pick-up/drop-off basis.
  • Clients tax information must be kept secure at all times
  • Forms can be completed manually or net-filed according to preference.
  • Participates in annual volunteer survey.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of annual income tax changes, benefits and requirements.
  • Knowledge of eligibility criteria.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Patience and understanding of client needs.
  • Ability to interact, listen and communicate clearly with others in a professional, courteous and pleasant manner.
  • Willingness to assist others in a non-judgmental manner with patience and understanding.

Qualifications

  • Annual certification and training through Canada Revenue Agency
  • Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and/or Vulnerable Sector Screen prior to start date and throughout volunteer duration as required by Links2Care.

Boundaries and Limitations

  • No additional financial services or advice provided to the client.
  • No copies made of any client information, other than the copy given to the client.
  • Do not accept payment or gifts of value for the service performed.
  • Do not provide client with personal phone number or address.

Working Conditions

  • May work in an office environment or from home.
  • May sit for extended periods
